Taking the Train in Vietnam

Taking an overnight train trip in Vietnam is a right of passage for travellers. The Reunification Express is more than just a train trip, for Vietnam the train line is a symbol of the country's resilience and unity. For the traveller it’s a great way to travel, avoiding airports and roads while (maybe) getting a good night’s sleep, like a baby in a rocking cradle.

Train tickets are best booked in advance on the 12go.asia website. But before we get to booking you know to know what ticket is best for you.

Sleeper Types

We recommend opting for a soft sleeper, as it offers the most comfortable and secure way to travel. The main difference between a hard sleeper and a soft sleeper is the number of people you share with; a hard sleeper accommodates six while a soft sleeper accommodates four. Both options provide individual amenities, including a reading light, pillow, sheet and duvet, storage space for luggage, and air-conditioning. Despite its name, a hard sleeper does not have a hard surface to sleep on, but rather has less headroom when sitting upright.

At the time of writing a soft sleeper from Hanoi to Hue costs about US$43 or AU$65.

Private Company Coaches

A number of private companies operate their own passenger coaches attached to the trains hauled by Vietnam Railways, hence they depart and arrive according to the same schedule. The coaches operated by the private railway companies provide a higher level of comfort, with luxury cabins decorated with wooden floor and cozy soft beds. The service also includes bottled water and snacks. Passenger cabins come in 2 berth and 4 berth compartments.

The price in these private coaches is nearly double the price of the Vietnam Railways bed. Current prices are approximately US$80 or AU$120 in a 4 berth cabin.

Tickets

The 12go.asia website is the place to go for train tickets. We provide links in our itineraries and the Itinerary Planner. It’s a pretty simple matter of choosing your preferred ticket, completing the form, and paying. You will receive your ticket by email. Note: Vietnam Railway tickets are only released 60-90 days in advance while privately operated coaches are available at least 6 months out.

The e-ticket you receive is all you need to travel.

All Aboard

Train stations are generally fairly centrally located and only a short taxi or Grab ride away. Be sure to be there at least 30 minutes before departure.

Onboard Facilities

Onboard the sleeper train, you'll find all the necessary facilities for an overnight journey. Each carriage features two toilets, one Western-style and one squatter, although cleanliness may not be guaranteed throughout the trip. There are no showers available. There is supposed to be access to Wi-Fi, though signal strength can vary. Each carriage also has hot water, making instant noodles a convenient meal option. There is also an onboard food cart that is pushing up and down the train but it’s probably best to eat dinner before boarding and carry snacks.

Empower your inner adventurer and DIY an awesome holiday in Vietnam.
